In 2024, petroleum products accounted for more than half of Norway&#8217;s total exports (Statistics Norway, 2025). Since the late 1960s, petroleum activities have contributed substantially  to value creation in the national economy. At the same time , the sector is characterised by market volatility in the market and complex geological conditions, placing strong demands on planning, investment decisions, and efficient resource utilisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Decision support for planning and field development<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Our solutions provide decision support throughout the entire life cycle of a field, from first assessments to production and late-phase operations. The analyses offer realistic   descriptions of reservoir properties and present uncertainty in a structured and transparent manner. This provides a stronger basis for investment and development decisions, supports risk reduction, and contributes to improved resource utilisation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Analytical tools for understanding the subsurface<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At NR, we develop analytical tools that are used in planning, development and operation of petroleum fields. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among other things, our solutions support:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>assessment of volume, structure and flow in complex reservoirs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>visualisation and quantification of uncertainty in decision processes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>integration of geological and geophysical data into coherent subsurface models. uncertainty in decision-processes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\t<div class=\"nr-spacer nr-spacer-small wp-block-nr-spacer\">\n\t<\/div>\n\t\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Software in industrial use<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We develop and maintain analytical software that is used operationally in the industry, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>HAVANA<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>HAVANA is used to analyse structural complexity and reservoir volume. One example is the <em>Geological Inversion to Geology<\/em> (GIG) consortium, which develops methods for improved interpretation of seismic data and geological models. NR leads the consortium together with some of the largest oil and gas companies on the Norwegian continental shelf. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The collaboration gives participants access to advanced methods and tools that can be used in operational settings, while while industry partners actively contribute to the scientific direction of the work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Beyond oil and gas<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Although our solutions are developed in close partnership with the petroleum industry, the underlying knowledge and methods are also relevant to other domains where subsurface understanding and robust decision support are essential. These include geothermal energy, groundwater modelling, and the management of subsurface natural resources.
