Privacy and security are two major concerns in the ubiquitous deployment of wireless patient monitoring systems, where wireless sensor networks become an integral part of the monitoring process. To address and handle threats which arise from the use of wireless sensors, we propose a framework using MPEG-21. MPEG-21 is an architecture that can handle end-to-end management of multimedia content in diverse networks. We propose and evaluate a framework that is designed to protect patient monitoring systems using resource-constrained wireless sensor networks. The analyses show that security architectures based on the MPEG-21 framework can handle a variety of threats. We also present a test bed in which our framework is about to be implemented.
